Corn Poppy, Shirley Double Mix
(Papaver rhoeas)
This variety of Shirley Corn Poppy flowers have double, semi-double and single petal arrangements featuring crepe paper-like petals that come in shades of white, coral, pink, red and bi-colors. This slender annual is native to Europe where it can be found in cultivated fields, meadows and roadsides. Breathtaking when planted in masses. Sow seed directly in the garden in fall or spring and barely rake into loose soil, as plants resent being transplanted and have a very small seed size. It is useful for wildflower and pollinator seed mixtures, as well as the cottage garden. Honey bees and wild bees are often seen collecting pollen from the flowers. Poppy seed pods are equally elegant in dried arrangements, and the top of the capsule will have small windows that open when ripened to disperse seeds within the landscape from wind and disturbance.
