Soil Renewal Cover Crop Mix
This high biomass cover crop mix contains ‘Lonestar’ Annual Ryegrass, ‘eNhance’ Persian Clover, as well as Hairy Vetch which all work in harmony to aid in water infiltration, erosion control, nutrient recycling, and weed suppression. Although this mix’s ideal season for sowing is in the spring, it can be sown from early spring through late summer. ‘Lonestar’ Annual Ryegrass is quick to establish with excellent cold tolerance, disease resistance, and vigorous root systems that break up compaction and reduce runoff and erosion. Ryegrass also provides vertical support for hairy vetch to climb upon. Clover and vetch fix nitrogen, provide weed suppression, provide beneficial insectaries, and feed wildlife such as bobwhite quail, turkey, deer and rabbits.
Termination once seed heads mature can be accomplished by mowing then tarping until all vegetative growth is dead, then tilling into the first few inches of the soil to fully terminate, as the root structure of this mix is dense. Once terminated, leave the organic matter to decompose, as this mix will slowly leach and incorporate nitrogen, phosphorous and other important elements back into the soil in usable forms to prepare for your next succession planting of flowers, vegetables or other crops.
