Wildflower Mixtures for Special Uses

Applewood Seed Company has developed many mixtures over the years and now has a diverse collection of mixes to fit various applications and uses.  These include mixes for ornamental purposes, wildlife plantings, prairie plantings, xeriscaping and for various site conditions.  If site conditions are relatively consistent, such as the presence of persistently moist soil or light shade, one of these mixtures may be appropriate. In addition, seed mixtures are available to fit certain height requirements or to serve a particular goal such as attracting birds and butterflies or providing water conservation.

Annuals for Sun Mixture

Flower Annuals for Sunny Areas

This lovely, annual mixture is suited for sunny locations and is excellent for temporary (one-season) displays.  It is also useful for over-seeding additional annuals into established perennial plantings for maximum display.

Bird and Butterfly Mixture

Bird and Butterfly Flowers Mixture

This annual and perennial mixture is great for creating a backyard habitat to attract your favorite winged wildlife.  The flowers will provide seeds and nectar for songbirds, hummingbirds and butterflies.

Dry Mixture

This annual and perennial mixture is suitable for areas that receive 10 to 30 inches of rainfall annually. It is also suitable for very well draining soils.

Golf Course Mixture

This annual mixture provides an ever-changing rainbow of colors throughout the growing season. It is suitable for areas near tees, greens, lakes or around the clubhouse.

Knee-Hi Mixture

Knee-high wildflower Mixture

This popular flower mixture is composed of annuals and perennials that are generally less than 24 inches tall at maturity.  It is especially suitable for residential or commercial landscaping projects where height may be an issue.

Low Growing Mixture

This popular flower mixture is composed of annuals and perennials that are generally less than 16 inches tall at maturity.  It is especially suitable for residential or commercial landscaping where height may be an issue.

Moist Mixture

Moist Climates Wildflowers Mixture

This mixture contains annuals and perennials that are suitable for areas that receive over 30 inches of rainfall or irrigation annually.  It will not prosper in very moist, saturated or wet soils. 

Native Perennial Mixture

This mixture provides a long-lasting, perennial planting filled with a colorful assortment of American natives. For use across the U.S. except southern Florida and extreme southern Texas (see Gulf Coast Mix for these areas.)

Shade Mixture

Wild Flowers Shade Mixture

This colorful mixture is composed of annuals and perennials that tolerate partial shade.  It works best in locations that receive strong, filtered sunlight or 1-4 hours of direct sun per day. This mix is not suitable for densely shaded locations.

Super Short Mixture

This mixture contains very low-growing annuals and perennials that are generally less than 10 inches tall and is useful where a colorful, carpet-like appearance is desired.

Short Prairie Flower Mixture

Planting a prairie recreates a piece of our natural heritage and can provide habitat for beneficial insects and wildlife.  This mix of short prairie flowers can be planted alone or with our Shortgrass Mixture. It is best for moderate to drier sites, and the height ranges from 12 to 36 inches.

Tall Prairie Flower Mixture

Planting a prairie recreates a piece of our natural heritage and can provide habitat for beneficial insects and wildlife.  This mix of tall prairie flowers can be planted alone or with our Tallgrass Mixture.  It is best for moderate to moister sites, and the height ranges from 24 to 96 inches.

Xeriscape Mix: Eastern USA

This mix of native wildflowers is for areas in the eastern U.S. and southeast Canada where water conservation is desired.
