Featured Flowers: New for 2012

Applewood Seed Company offers over 300 types of wildflowers, garden flowers, grasses and herbs. In this section, we are featuring some of our new flowers for 2012.

The following may be purchased in bulk as individual species or you may find them in our blended flower seed mixtures. Crop production was excellent this year for most items, but a few of these will be limited and should be ordered early!

Dahlia 'Dwarf Single Mix'

Dahlia Dwarf Single Mix

This variety of Dahlia is a dwarf type which grows 10 to 16 inches tall.  The mixture of single flowers includes shades of  purple, red, rose, salmon, white and yellow.  It can be started in plugs in early spring or seeded directly outdoors for first year blooms.  Dahlia is excellent for containers, beds and borders.  For an extended flower show, remove spent flower buds promptly.  Seed availability will be limited so order early.

Annual Iceplant, also known as Livingstone Daisy or Mesembryanthemum, is a succulent annual with daisy-like flowers.  The mixture is composed of vibrant shades of orange, pink, purple, red, white and yellow.  It makes an excellent groundcover and works well in containers.  It also creates a colorful border in flower beds.  Annual Iceplant needs sunny locations and well-draining soils.

This beautiful Dianthus has fringed petals and is immensely fragrant.  The large flowers come in a mixture of lilac, rose, carmine, white and purple.  Many flowers are bicolored or have contrasting rings. This variety makes a wonderful, scented cut flower.  The plants grow 12-18 inches tall.

This charming variety of Sweet Pea comes in a mix of white, pink, rose, red and purple.  The long stems make 'Mammoth Mix' especially good for cutting, and the flowers are fragrant.  This Sweet Pea prefers cooler weather and should be planted in early spring.

This exquisite, compact nasturtium has mottled flowers with shades of white, pink, deep rose and cherry.  It can be planted in flower beds and borders as well as containers.  Nasturtiums are easy to grow by direct-seeding and have edible flowers with a sweet and peppery taste.

This spreading Verbena comes in a mix of vibrant colors and does well in hot, dry climates.  It is excellent as a ground cover as well as for flower beds, borders and hanging baskets.  The mix consists of dark purple, lavender, peach, white, red, rose and burgundy.  Plants grow 8 - 16 inches tall.

This annual wildflower is native to Texas and is found in sandy soils of the Texas Coastal Plains and Rio Grande plains.  It is a drought tolerant species that is ideal for xeriscaping.  It is also good for pollinator conservation gardens because it provides nectar and pollen for wild bees and butterflies.  Height is 12-36 inches.  Seed will be limited so order early!

This perennial wildflower is native to the southwestern U.S. and is found in open, sandy hillsides and mesas.  The sturdy clumps grow up to 18 inches tall and can spread up to 3 feet wide.  The flowers open up in late afternoon and close each morning.  The color ranges from light pink to deep magenta.  The deep, stout roots of this plant make it excellent for xeriscaping.
